The French painter Félix Planquette, born in Arras in 1873 and died in Paris in 1964, devotes a significant part of his work to landscape and animal painting. He depicts, in particular, the Normandy countryside and the shores of the English Channel, as well as the Creuse and the Côte d’Azur. His travels in Spain and Scotland provide him with further sources of inspiration.
His training takes him to Alexandre Houzé in Arras, Pharaon de Winter in Lille, Adrien Demont in Wissant, and then Fernand Cormon in Paris. He settles in Wissant and takes part in the school that develops there. He later establishes his practice in Montmartin-sur-Mer, in the Manche department. His career is marked by distinctions: he receives the prix Brizard in 1901 and the prix Rosa-Bonheur in 1912; at the Salon des artistes français, where he exhibits regularly, he is awarded prizes in 1900 and 1902, and receives a travel grant in 1905.
An exhibition of his work is recorded at the Galerie Georges Petit in Paris from 1 to 15 April 1911. The Musée des beaux-arts d’Arras holds four oil paintings on canvas: Crépuscule dans la Hague, Labour en baie du Mont-Saint-Michel, Un matin dans la Creuse and Pâturage sur les côtes normandes. The Palais des beaux-arts de Lille also holds Coucher de soleil, an oil painting on wood. Émile Poiteau’s monograph, Félix Planquette, paysagiste et animalier, is published in Arras around 1930; it comprises 48 pages and 15 black-and-white illustrations outside the text.
