His career was marked early on by Gauguin, and later by Roger Bissière and the informal abstraction of the École de Paris. Painting and drawing bear witness to an interplay between observing everyday life and reinventing generic forms. Within the space of the painting, colour and drawing respond to one another; the line, described as subtle and vibrant, may seem hesitant without losing its precision. Paper is his preferred medium, including for large-format works, which he subsequently mounts onto canvas stretched over a frame. He often works in groups, such as Les Bateaux-feu, Les Jardins, Les Veilleurs and Les Mains, and also revisits works by Frans Hals—notably his Régentes—and Paul Cézanne, including his Baigneurs and Baigneuses.
Exchanges with writers also play a part in his career: he conceives numerous books with Paul Louis Rossi, Jean-Pierre Abraham and Charles Juliet. His wife, the writer Antoinette Dilasser, is presented as his principal interpreter. In 1990, Jean-Marc Huitorel publishes Dilasser with Éditions de La Différence.
His exhibitions span several decades. Galerie La Roue presents his work in Paris in 1975; in 1986, the Musée des beaux-arts de Rennes exhibits his paintings and works on paper. In 2000, Frac Bretagne organises Peintures et dessins 1988-2000 at the Galerie du Faouëdic in Lorient. After his death, Domaine de Kerguéhennec presents François Dilasser. L’atelier – Œuvres choisies 1972-2007 in 2013, followed in 2015 by an exhibition at Mamco in Geneva devoted to several groups of works, including Les Veilleurs, Les Régentes and Les Bateaux-feu. Works are held in several public collections. Frac Normandie holds Bateau-feu (1992), made in acrylic on paper mounted onto canvas; the Centre national des arts plastiques holds Printemps (1984), in oil and acrylic on canvas, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper holds La Mer Rouge III ou Le Passage de la mer Rouge (1990). The Frac Bretagne collection includes Horizontales sur fond gris + bleu (1976), two works titled Sans titre dated 1982 and 1983, and Métamorphoses (1993), a work on paper mounted onto canvas.
