Francesco Simonini specialised in battles and military scenes. Trained in Parma by Ilario Spolverini, he later studied Jacques Courtois’s paintings in Florence and worked in several Italian cities. His activity in Venice is documented between 1731 and 1748. There, his patrons included Field Marshal Johann Matthias von der Schulenburg and the Gradenigo and Pisani families.
A Campaign Scene in London’s National Gallery, painted between 1740 and 1745, shows an officer on a white horse, resting soldiers and military transport moving through a valley. Strong colours animate a landscape that combines observation with invention. Drawings preserved in the Museo Correr also record military decorations made for the Cappello and Balbi families. The painted cycles themselves are lost, making these surviving sheets evidence of a further aspect of his work.
This profile brings together identity references for Francesco Simonini and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
