Born in Hanover in 1955, the German painter Andreas Schulze develops a form of figuration in which rounded forms create a register that is both playful and humorous. From 1978 to 1983, he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf with the painter Dieter Krieg. In his paintings, cushions, lamps and furniture, often drawn from the domestic sphere, sit alongside a more unsettling abstraction. This meeting of familiar motifs and rounded forms gives his work a distinctive tone, in which playfulness does not dispel strangeness.
His practice also extends to immersive installations that bring together painted walls and floors, objects designed by the artist and found furniture. In 1985, shortly after his first exhibitions, he began working with the gallerist Monika Sprueth, a collaboration that continues. A work titled “Ohne Titel”, dated 1986, illustrates the scale his work on canvas can attain: made in acrylic on cotton canvas and composed of two parts, it measures 200 × 400 cm. The catalogue entry states that it is signed and dated on the reverse “A. Schulze 86”.
This profile brings together identity references for Andreas Schulze and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
