Eugène Cicéri’s landscape practice ranges from working from nature around Fontainebleau to views circulated through prints and theatre scenery. His publications and contributions to major illustrated collections also attest to his interest in the landscapes of different regions. The son of the painter and stage designer Pierre-Luc-Charles Cicéri, he received his first lessons from his father and his uncle, the painter Eugène Isabey. He is also described as the grandson of the painter Jean-Baptiste Isabey. He painted landscapes in Fontainebleau and its surroundings, then settled in Marlotte in 1849, among the first artists to settle in the village.
His travels in the Alps and the Pyrenees are associated with publications such as Les Pyrénées dessinées d’après nature et lithographiées and La Suisse et la Savoie. He also contributed to the Voyages pittoresques et romantiques dans l’ancienne France, notably with views of Brittany. Like his father, he produced theatre scenery. In 1886, he took part in the Exposition internationale de blanc et noir and received a third-class silver medal in the charcoal section. Works are recorded in several public collections: Une cour de ferme (1837) at the musée des Beaux-Arts d’Angers, Paysage avec maisons et figures at the Louvre, and Vue générale des Eaux-Bonnes (1858) at the musée des Beaux-Arts de Pau. The musée Magnin in Dijon also holds works attributed to his body of work, including Paysage rocheux, formerly titled Paysage montagneux, and Un coude de la Seine à Bougival (1872).
This profile brings together identity references for Eugène Ciceri and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
