Emilio Sánchez Perrier’s career spans from the landscapes of Andalusia shown at the Paris Salon to the banks of the Oise that he painted in Pontoise: two places that appear in his works and in the documented stages of his career. In 1879, he received a gold medal at the regional exhibition in Cádiz, then settled in Paris, where he worked in the studios of Auguste Boulard, Jean-Léon Gérôme and Félix Ziem. The following year, he exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and at the Paris Salon, where he presented two Andalusian landscapes; in 1889, he received a silver medal at the Universal Exposition. From 1889, he stayed in Pontoise and painted the banks of the Oise with Luis Jiménez Aranda, before returning to Spain in 1890.
Drawn to history as much as to landscape, Sánchez Perrier also produced lithographs devoted to picturesque details. The sources describe an evolution in his painting towards increased realism and a search for detail in his landscapes. Bords de l’Oise, dated 1898, bears witness to his interest in this subject: this oil on panel is held at the musée Tavet-Delacour in Pontoise. Le Pont de Pontoise, Nocturne, dated circa 1889, is an oil on panel listed in a private collection in Seville. Péniche à l’île Saint-Martin, à Pontoise, dated circa 1895, is also an oil on panel, recorded in a private collection in Madrid.
