Emil Ciocoiu

Born : 1948Died : 2020Documented citizenships : Romania

He joins the Union of German Artists in 1983. These milestones mark a trajectory that leads him to present his works at several venues in Europe, while the cycles and themes described in the sources reveal an interest in light, peace and understanding among peoples.

His first cycle created in Germany is that of the “infinite plains” (Campiile infinite). Ciocoiu describes this period as one in which his work seems to “seek the light in a vanishing-point perspective”, a phrase that links the drive towards light with a construction in depth. According to Carmen Dragan, peace is another recurring theme. In the works titled Judaism, Christianity, Islamism and Buddhism, she notes intersecting axes of light, which she interprets as a symbol of understanding among peoples. The trilogy Song of Water brings together Dawn, Phoenix and Nocturnal Symphony. The first piece is described as a sunrise over the sea; the other two extend the cycle to its nocturnal conclusion.

His works are presented at the Salon des indépendants in Paris from 1994 to 2000. In 1997, the European Parliament organises an exhibition of his paintings; he then exhibits at NATO headquarters in Brussels in 2002, followed by the Berlaymont, headquarters of the European Commission, in 2006. In 2008, the touring exhibition Pictor printre stele is presented in Romania, notably at the Craiova Art Museum. The artist’s website states that his paintings are exhibited at the Ludwig Museum of International Art in Beijing and the National Museum of Art of Romania in Bucharest. It also mentions works in the collections of the Royal House of the Netherlands, in The Hague, and the Royal House of Jordan, in Amman. Two books devoted to Ciocoiu are cited: the one by Nicola Micieli, published by Ghirlandina in 2003, and the one by Marius Tita, published by ARC in 2008.
