Melchior de Hondecoeter was a Dutch painter who specialised in animals, particularly birds. Raised in a family of painters, he continued his training with Jan Baptist Weenix and settled in Amsterdam in 1663. His compositions arrange animals prominently in the foreground, before a landscape, tree or architectural feature.
Geese and Ducks in the Mauritshuis brings birds together beneath a stormy sky. This painting and its companion belonged to the Orange-Nassau collections, demonstrating the decorative role of animal painting in aristocratic residences. Hondecoeter also painted dead game. In A Hare, preserved in Caen, the suspended animal occupies the centre of the composition. The delicacy of the brushwork and colour contrasts with the violence of the subject, directing renewed attention towards the animal’s body and its presentation.
