Jan Zrzavý participated in Czech modern art as a painter, draughtsman, illustrator and stage designer. After attending private schools and Prague’s School of Applied Arts, he continued his training largely independently. A member of Sursum and the Tvrdošíjní group, he developed an art imbued with poetic Symbolism. His landscapes combine imaginary places with memories of Bohemia, Brittany, Italy and Greece.
Book illustration forms another essential strand of his work. During the 1920s, he supplied images for Mácha’s May and Erben’s A Bouquet, published by Aventinum. He later returned to books through Shakespeare’s Sonnets and texts by Julius Zeyer. Between 1947 and 1950, he also taught painting and composition at Palacký University in Olomouc, bringing together his artistic practice and teaching.
This profile brings together identity references for Jan Zrzavý and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
