Claude Bellegarde (1927–2019) was a French painter born in Paris, where he also died. Following a stay in a sanatorium in 1951, he devoted himself to painting. His white period, from 1953 to 1957, explored light through layered whites and variations in surface texture. Alongside canvases, he worked with crumpled, kneaded or chewed paper coated in white paint. He exhibited at Studio Facchetti in Paris in 1955, followed by the exhibition ‘Achrome’ in Milan. During the 1960s, colour became a psychological language in his work. His Typogrammes, developed between 1963 and 1966, offered psychic portraits, including those of Pierre Restany and Camille Bryen. The Cabines psy-color, developed from 1964 to 1970, extended this investigation into a space that viewers could enter. Moving from monochrome painting to chromatic environments, his practice connected the experience of light and pictorial matter with the perception of inner states.
