Chuta Kimura (1917–1987), born in Takamatsu and deceased in Paris, developed a form of landscape painting in which representation became allusive. Trained in drawing in his hometown, he worked in oils and oil pastel. His first American exhibition at New York’s David Findlay Gallery in 1958 preceded numerous Paris exhibitions organised by Jacques Zeitoun from 1965.
Settling in Châtenay-Malabry in 1962, Kimura also worked at Clos-Saint-Pierre near Cannes. Its garden inspired, among other works, a sequence of twenty pastels made in 1983–1984. The Phillips Collection in Washington holds Summer in the Pyrenees and Garden at Clos-Saint-Pierre and presented an exhibition in 1985. Through landscape, Kimura sought an inward light, giving colour a deeply personal dimension within his painting.
This profile brings together identity references for Chuta Kimura and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
