Charles Maussion (1923–2010) was a French painter born in Nantes whose work explores space, light and an increasingly economical use of line. After moving to Paris in the aftermath of the war, he studied mathematics and art history and attended classes with André Lhote and Fernand Léger. Mondrian influenced his early work; in 1952, he visited Georges Vantongerloo with a group of young artists.
Associated with the Galerie Arnaud circle between 1951 and 1954, Maussion exhibited at Iris Clert in the 1950s and subsequently with Lucien Durand and Jacques Dubourg. His practice gradually moved towards a distilled visual language encompassing landscapes, trees, birds and mountains. Light and the relationship between forms and surrounding space remained central, with line assuming a greater role in his later work. Robert and Lisa Sainsbury supported him for many years. The Centre Pompidou holds Oiseau n°11 (2000), a tempera work on paper mounted on canvas, acquired as a gift in 2009.
Piguet’s October 2014 catalogue lists L’arbuste No. 2, mixed media and blended pencil, signed and dated 83, 39 × 48 cm (lot 1353).
