Cesare Mariani trained in Rome at the Accademia di San Luca and then in Tommaso Minardi’s studio, which he attended between 1842 and 1850. His early work included small views and genre scenes. Portraits and drawings of ordinary people subsequently accompanied an extensive practice in religious painting, combining a purist artistic background with an interest in naturalism.
His monumental projects included decorations for several Roman churches. A study of musical angels, dated around 1871–1874, prepared the dome decoration at Santa Maria di Loreto. From 1884 Mariani also painted frescoes on the nave vaults and dome of Ascoli Piceno Cathedral. The Italian Ministry of Economy identifies him as the artist responsible for its Sala della Maggioranza, providing an example of a civic commission alongside his ecclesiastical work.
This profile brings together identity references for Cesare Mariani and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
