The French painter and lithographer Roland Lefranc grounded a significant part of his work in Lower Normandy: the coastline occupies a prominent place, alongside ports, regattas, rural landscapes, villages and equestrian scenes. Born in Carcagny in 1931, he lived in Saint-Vigor-le-Grand and died in Bayeux in 2000.
From 1947 to 1951, he attended the teacher-training college in Caen and, alongside this, took classes with Louis-Édouard Garrido at the École des beaux-arts; he also learned printmaking with Raphaël Manchon. He then completed twenty-seven months of military service in Algeria, notably at the military school in Cherchell and later with the 5th Algerian Tirailleurs Regiment. On returning to France in 1956, he worked as a primary-school teacher until 1974 while continuing to paint. In 1964, he acquired an old farm in Saint-Vigor-le-Grand, where he settled.
His travels provided subjects for his work: he visited Aurigny in 1965, then the Lot and Spain the following year. The biographical source locates in the Lot part of his work devoted to livestock markets. His travels later took him to Switzerland and the Netherlands in 1977, then to Peru and Bolivia in 1989, Russia and Italy in 1990, and China. He painted the Great Wall during a stay in 1991, then returned to China in 1999 at the invitation of the Chinese Embassy in Paris. That same year, he received the title of Peintre officiel de la Marine.
His first solo exhibitions included those at Galerie Cadomus in Caen in 1960 and 1961, Galerie Valentine Descombes in Paris in 1963, and Galerie Arkadès in Caen in 1964. A retrospective was organised at the Musée Baron-Gérard in Bayeux in 1970; he subsequently exhibited several times at Galerie Rollin in Rouen, from 1979 to 1997. In July 1998, the Abbaye aux Dames in Caen presented « Images d’ici et d’ailleurs ». His work also includes illustrations for Maïna Jablonska’s book Et le spectacle continue..., published in 1965. In 1994, a Jubilee of Liberty medal was associated with the fiftieth anniversary of the Normandy landings and the Comité du Débarquement.
