The Swedish painter, lithographer and sculptor Bengt Lindström developed, from 1949 onwards, a less figurative and increasingly colourful style of painting, drawing on Nordic references and popular and mythological sources. Born in 1925 in Storsjökapell, he died in 2008 in Sundsvall. Often associated with Cobra painting, he referred instead to Nolde, Munch and Ensor; popular art, Sami mythology and the shamans of the Far North are also cited among his sources of inspiration.
After studying in Scandinavia, Lindström went to Chicago in 1946 to study at the Art Institute. He settled in Paris the following year and worked in the studios of André Lhote and Fernand Léger. His first appearances in Paris included the Salon des Réalités nouvelles in 1952, the Galerie Craven in 1953 and the Salon d’Octobre in 1954; that same year, he held his first solo exhibition in Sweden, at Gummesson’s art salon.
His printed work includes a series of ten lithographs devoted to Scandinavian mythology, as well as a series of drypoints. He also produced a mural for the Grand Hotel in Härnösand and two frescoes for the covered market of Nacksta-Sundsvall. In Murano, in collaboration with the San Carlo gallery, he created Les Grands Verres, a series of vases and crystal sculptures.
The Midlanda contemporary art centre housed the collection of the Bengt and Michèle Lindström Foundation, comprising paintings and sculptures as well as a body of prints described as comprising approximately 800 works. A few years after its establishment in Midlanda, the collection was transferred to the Länsmuseet i Västernorrland in Härnösand. After suffering a stroke in 2003, Lindström stopped painting. A monograph on the artist by Françoise Monnin was published by Ides et Calendes in 2001.
This profile brings together identity references for Bengt Lindström and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
14 references are documented at Dobiaschofsky, DognyAuction, Schuler, Piguet. Each record links to its source; the amounts are not a general valuation of the artist’s work.
