Born in Monterrey in 1956, Sylvia Ordóñez studied printmaking in Barcelona in 1979, after her first solo exhibitions in Mexico. Her painting developed from experiments with geometry and materials towards village scenes, still lifes and self-portraits. Changes of scale and the displacement of fruit or domestic objects transform everyday settings into imaginary spaces, where pictorial construction organises the interplay of colour.
The Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Monterrey presented a retrospective in 1993. Her work subsequently appeared in Del deseo y la memoria at the Museo Amparo in 1995. In 2019, Vientos del norte brought her work together with that of Arturo Marty at the Pinacoteca de Nuevo León. Ordóñez’s thirty-six exhibited pieces connected figuration, geometry and nature within domestic interiors transformed into fantastic worlds.
