Active in London as a botanical painter and teacher, Augusta Innes Withers supplied illustrations for horticultural publications. She contributed to Benjamin Maund’s Botanist, published between 1836 and 1842, and to works by John Lindley. Paintings held by the Fitzwilliam Museum demonstrate the range of her subjects: orchids, passionflowers, bouquets, potted plants and butterflies accompanying flowers.
An Auricula in a Pot, within a Wicker Cache-pot, in the same museum, combines watercolour, gum arabic and white highlights. Her signature records her position as flower painter to Queen Adelaide. The Royal Horticultural Society also preserves watercolours by Withers in its collection of royal signatures, in which patrons of the institution added their names to completed botanical compositions, linking floral painting with horticultural patronage.
This profile brings together identity references for Augusta Innes Withers and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
