Antonin Fanart

Born : 1831Died : 1903Documented citizenships : France

Antonin Fanart was a French landscape painter, born in Besançon in 1831, where he also died in 1903. At eighteen he travelled to Geneva to study with François Diday. Visits to Switzerland and Savoy provided subjects for his early mountain paintings, while the landscapes of the Franche-Comté region occupied a substantial place in his work throughout his career.

His paintings belong to the regional landscape tradition presented by the Musée Courbet through the banks of the Loue and the Jura hills. The museum owns works by Fanart alongside those of other artists contemporary with Courbet. His commitment to Besançon also included organising exhibitions. In 1994, the city’s Musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Archéologie devoted a retrospective to him, recalling his place in nineteenth-century painting in Franche-Comté.

This profile brings together identity references for Antonin Fanart and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
