Anselme Boix-Vives (1899–1969), a French painter of Spanish origin, began painting at around the age of sixty. A self-taught artist, he devoted himself to painting after his wife’s death in 1962 and produced more than two thousand works in a few years. Born in Herbeset, in the municipality of Morella, he settled in France at the age of eighteen. He held several jobs, including shepherd, before opening a fruit and vegetable shop in Moûtiers in 1926. He became a French citizen in March 1940.
In his paintings, human figures, often described as ape-like, appear alongside lush vegetation. The vivid palette and dense compositions also bring together animals and imaginary landscapes, recurring motifs in his work. His thinking was not limited to painting: in the mid-1950s, he embarked on a utopian project for a “world peace plan”, accompanied by a manifesto and developed in texts addressed to international institutions. A publication entitled “Du nouveau sur la planète. Plan financier d'organisation mondiale. La Paix par le travail” is listed as having been published in Moûtiers by the author, with no date indicated.
Recognition of his work is reflected, among other things, in an exhibition at the Kunsthalle de Berne in 1964, curated by Harald Szeemann, and in his first solo exhibition in France, held the same year at the galerie Denise Breteau in Paris. In 1968, the Musée-Château d’Annecy presented “L’Univers d’Anselme Boix-Vives, peintre poète et financier”. Later, the musée des Beaux-Arts de Chambéry devoted an exhibition to him from 25 November 2017 to 11 March 2018. The galerie Alain Margaron lists the LaM, the Musée national d’art moderne–Centre Pompidou and the Musée des Musées de Laval among the public collections holding his works. His catalogue raisonné was published in two volumes, in 2003 and 2005, with texts by Marie-Caroline de Sainsaulieu and, for the second volume, Laurent Danchin.
