André Engel, a landscape painter born in 1880, came from an Alsatian family connected with the textile industry in Mulhouse and grew up at Château de Ripaille beside Lake Geneva. His early career combined science and art: educated in Basel, Lausanne and Paris, he received lessons from the painter Hans Sandreuter and became a doctor. He devoted himself fully to painting from 1905, before returning to medicine during the First World War in a mobile radiology unit. Exhibitions at Galerie Georges Petit subsequently marked his presence in Paris. A traveller with an interest in botany, he created an arboretum near Ripaille. He also illustrated books, including Six Contes Vosgiens in 1925. Vision de mai is recorded at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Mulhouse.
This profile brings together identity references for André Engel and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
