Leonardo Bazzaro studied with Gaetano Fasanotti before entering Giuseppe Bertini’s class at the Brera Academy in Milan. His early paintings depict interiors of Milanese churches and palaces. He subsequently turned towards outdoor light and scenes of everyday life, while his brother Ernesto pursued a separate career as a sculptor.
Chioggia became a recurring setting in Bazzaro’s mature work. Prayer in Chioggia, painted in 1897, and Alla benedizione, also called Un vespro a Chioggia and dated 1898–1901, belong to the Cariplo collection. The watercolour In lettura, held in Pavia and dated around 1880–1885, demonstrates another aspect of his practice. The regional catalogue relates its evanescent figure and coloured washes to Tranquillo Cremona and Daniele Ranzoni, leading artists associated with the Scapigliatura movement.
