Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, born in Venice in 1682 and deceased there in 1754, worked as both painter and draughtsman. His training with Giuseppe Maria Crespi in Bologna informed his exploration of light. In The Sacrifice of Isaac, painted around 1715 and belonging to the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection, strong contrasts of light and shade shape the figures and give the biblical scene its dramatic tension.
Piazzetta also produced expressive heads as studies and as works for collectors. The young girl in the Städel, around 1745, may represent his daughter Barbara, rendered with soft modelling. His drawn Self-Portrait in the Thyssen museum uses charcoal and white accents. The Metropolitan Museum’s Boy with a Staff similarly combines dark material and light highlights on coloured paper, demonstrating the importance of drawing within his practice.
This profile brings together identity references for Giovanni Battista Piazzetta and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
