Egge Sturm-Skrla

Born : 1894Died : 1943Documented citizenships : Austria

The fresco provides continuity in Egge Sturm-Skrla’s career: after learning this technique from Murr and Bellatti during trips to South Tyrol and Italy, he worked with Anton Faistauer on the frescoes in the Salzburg Festival Hall in 1926, then directed a master school of fresco painting in Ronco, near Ascona, Switzerland, from 1929 to 1935. This specialisation built on training in Vienna, which began with private painting lessons with Karl Haunold from 1907 to 1909 and continued at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, where he studied with Rudolf Bacher and Rudolf Jettmar from 1911 to 1914. After his work in Ronco, he returned to Vienna.

From 1919, he was a member of the Hagenbund; from 1921, he also belonged to the Wiener Künstlerhaus and the Neue Vereinigung. A sale entry notes his participation in the third Rome Biennale in 1925 and mentions exhibitions at the Vienna Secession, without specifying their dates. The lot entitled Sitzender Akt mit rotem Tuch is listed as having been exhibited at the Künstlerhaus in Vienna in 1929; its entry reports a label bearing the number 1929/1194.

The entries for several works document distinct techniques and subjects: Waking, dated 1920, is described as an oil on canvas measuring 42 × 52.7 cm; Schneeschmelze, from 1925, as an oil on canvas, framed, measuring 80 × 92 cm, signed and dated at the lower right. Sitzender Akt mit rotem Tuch is also listed as signed and dated 1920. Blick auf Krems an der Donau is a gouache on paper laid down on cardboard, measuring 59 × 66 cm; the entry reports the inscription “Pfaffenberg-Krems Egge Sturm Skrla” on the reverse. The source states that works by Sturm-Skrla are held at the Belvedere and the Wien Museum.
