Max Tilke (1869–1942) places drawing at the service of clothing history. His publications of the 1920s include studies of tunics, coats, belts and footwear from Egypt; some of the objects depicted now belong to Berlin’s Museum für Byzantinische Kunst. The image describes more than a silhouette: it helps explain how a textile garment is assembled and worn.
In Oriental Costumes, published in 1922 and held by the Smithsonian Libraries, Tilke presents garments spread out, generally at a scale of one to ten, to clarify their cut. Seams, sleeves and fastenings become clues to construction. A 1921 watercolour depicting an overcoat from Tashkent, preserved in Berlin’s Kunstbibliothek, demonstrates this attention to the isolated garment. Colour operates as material information as well as a pictorial means.
This profile brings together identity references for Max Karl Tilke and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
