Born in Mont-Saint-Père in the Aisne in 1844, Léon Augustin Lhermitte retained a deep attachment to rural life. Before gaining recognition at the Salon during the 1870s, he supported himself partly through engraving work in France and England. His large compositions of the 1880s used inhabitants of his native village as models, with recognisable figures recurring across paintings.
La Paye des moissonneurs, painted in 1882 and held by the Musée d'Orsay, gives monumental scale to a scene of agricultural life. Also a charcoal draughtsman and pastellist, Lhermitte observed gestures, occupations and working conditions in a naturalist manner. He also addressed urban life: Les Halles, made for Paris's city hall and exhibited in 1895, belongs to the Petit Palais. He died in 1925.
This profile brings together identity references for Léon Augustin Lhermitte and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
