Ecuadorian painter Enrique Tábara Zerna, also known as Luis Enrique Tábara, was born in Guayaquil in 1930. His work evolves from figures associated with urban life towards abstraction, and then towards a so-called ancestralist exploration informed by pre-Columbian cultures. His early works depict, among other things, grotesque figures, marginalised people from Guayaquil, prostitutes and portraits. From 1953, he turns towards a more abstract style of painting.
In 1946, he enters the School of Fine Arts in Guayaquil, where he studies under Hans Michaelson and Luis Martinez Serrano, completing his training in 1951. His first exhibition in the United States is held in 1954 at the Organization of American States in Washington; in 1963, he represents Ecuador at the third Paris Biennale alongside Humberto Moré and Theo Constanté. In 1955, the Ecuadorian government awards him a scholarship to study at the Llotja School in Barcelona. After nine years living and working in Europe, he returns to Ecuador in 1964.
On his return, he develops a movement described as ancestralist, inspired by pre-Columbian cultures. Shortly afterwards, he founds the informalist group VAN, an abbreviation of Vanguardia Artística Nacional. He dies on 25 January 2021.
