Hermine David works in landscape and portraiture; one biographical source describes her as post-Impressionist. She studies at the Académie Julian, in Jean-Paul Laurens’s studio, from 1902 to 1905, then learns printmaking. She is also placed among the members of the École de Paris in the first half of the twentieth century.
Printmaking also features in the illustrated book: David creates the frontispiece and vignettes for Ariel ou la vie de Shelley by André Maurois, published in 1924, then six drypoints for Fabien by François Mauriac, in 1926. From the 1940s onwards, she also works in Limoges enamel on copper. After a stay in New York, she travels with Pascin in the southern United States, as far as Mexico, and to Cuba.
From 1932 to 1936, she takes part in the exhibitions of the Société des femmes artistes modernes; in 1932, she is made a Knight of the Légion d’honneur. After Pascin’s death, she exhibits at Lucy Krohg’s, according to the biographical source, until the 1960s. In 1966, she retires to the Maison nationale des artistes in Nogent-sur-Marne.
This profile brings together identity references for Hermine David and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
