Agustín Cárdenas (1927–2001), trained at Havana’s San Alejandro academy, settles in France in 1955 and joins André Breton’s Surrealist circle. His sculpture explores passages between bodies, plant forms and abstract volumes through wood, bronze and marble. The choice of material contributes to the particular presence of each sculptural form.
At the Centre Pompidou, a small untitled sculpture of around 1955 combines a cylindrical wooden body with a cup and two rings carved from the surrounding material. It belongs to the ensemble of André Breton’s studio wall, as does Oiseau connu, a bronze of 1956 on a wooden base. Colonne en fleurs I, made in mahogany in 1973 and preserved at the Musée d’Art moderne de Paris, extends this relationship between an upright form and suggestions of living things.
This profile brings together identity references for Agustín Cárdenas and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
