Elisabetta Sirani was a Bolognese painter who took charge of her family’s workshop at a young age. Independent by nineteen, she supported her family when her father could no longer work. She also taught other women, including her two sisters. Her career therefore combines artistic production, workshop management and the passing on of skills.
Virgin and Child of 1663, held by the National Museum of Women in the Arts, presents Mary as a young mother wearing a turban; the child offers her a crown of roses. In The Infant Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness of 1664, now at the National Galleries of Scotland, the boy fills a bowl at a spring beside a lamb and a reed cross. Such familiar gestures give the sacred figures a tangible presence.
This profile brings together identity references for Elisabetta Sirani and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
