Long Jack Phillipus Tjakamarra participated in the beginnings of the Papunya painting movement. Settling in the community in 1962, he joined its painters in 1971 and contributed to the Honey Ant mural with Kaapa Tjampitjinpa and Billy Stockman. His work connects Country with ancestral Dreaming narratives through signs that organise a view of landscape without a horizon.
Emu Dreaming (1972), held by the National Gallery of Victoria, uses synthetic polymer paint on composition board. Emu tracks and circles structure a view from above. In Making Spears (1975), presented by the National Museum of Australia, radiating lines represent spears being prepared near a camp at Wilkinkarra. The marks therefore do more than describe places: they make actions and movements through Country visible.
This profile brings together identity references for Long Jack Phillipus Tjakamarra and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
