Jean-Baptiste Poncet's career was rooted in Lyon's artistic milieu and the circle of Hippolyte Flandrin. Trained by Joseph Soumy and Flandrin among others, he later became a professor at the Lyon School of Fine Arts. He assisted with his teacher's decorative work in several churches and helped disseminate Flandrin's paintings through reproductive prints. These activities linked apprenticeship, collaboration and transmission. Poncet also exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1857, producing portraits and paintings of mythological subjects. His portrait of Flandrin underlines the closeness of their careers, while his own compositions developed his work with the figure. Through teaching several Lyon painters, he extended his activity beyond the production of individual pictures. He died in Lyon in 1901.
