The Italian painter Mario Tozzi was born in Fossombrone in 1895. He trained in Bologna before continuing his career in Paris. After abandoning his studies in chemistry, he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in 1913, where he met Giorgio Morandi and Osvaldo Licini, and graduated in 1915. Demobilised in 1919, he married Marie Thérèse Lemaire and settled with her in the French capital.
In Paris, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants, the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. In 1926, he reconnected with Licini and became part of the circle of other Italian avant-garde painters, including Severo Pozzati, who became his friend. With Massimo Campigli, Giorgio de Chirico, Filippo de Pisis, Renato Paresce, Alberto Savinio and Gino Severini, he founded the Groupe des Sept, also known as the Italians of Paris.
After returning to Rome in 1936, Tozzi devoted himself to fresco painting. In 1938, he created a fresco for the interior of the Palace of Justice in Milan, the year he also exhibited at the Venice Biennale. He returned there in 1942 and was represented again in 1948, 1952 and 1954.
In 1958, he resumed exhibiting at the Annunciata Gallery in Milan. Settled in Suna from 1960, in the family home, he made the paintings he titled « Fonds blancs », as well as colour lithographs depicting still lifes and women’s heads. These works extended his practice into distinct media and subject matter; the available information does not allow the formal choices to be specified further.
Works by Tozzi are listed in the collections of the Centre Pompidou, the Museum of Fine Arts of Lyon and the Kunstmuseum Bern. A general catalogue raisonné of his paintings, compiled by Marilena Pasquali, was published in 1988.
