Jan Wiegers, a Dutch painter and sculptor born in Kommerzijl and who died in Amsterdam, is particularly associated with the founding of the Groningen artists’ group De Ploeg in 1917. His training combined sculpture and painting: he studied sculpture with Dirk de Vries Lam at the Academie Minerva in Groningen, then painting with Frederik Jansen in The Hague and A. H. R. Van Maasdijk in Rotterdam. In 1912, he visited the Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne. According to Artpeers, he met Ernst Ludwig Kirchner in Davos in 1920, and his work was strongly influenced by the German artist.
Wiegers lived and worked in Groningen, Davos and Amsterdam; he settled in the latter city in 1934, then became a professor at the Rijksacademie in 1953. His practice encompassed painting, watercolour, printmaking, lithography and sculpture. A coloured-chalk drawing entitled “Sommerliche Seeuferpartie”, signed lower right and measuring 42 × 51 cm, is listed by Dobiaschofsky.
