Albert Kappis (1836–1914) approaches landscape representation after an apprenticeship in lithography with Adam Gatternicht in Stuttgart. His training as a painter subsequently takes him from Stuttgart to Munich; in 1880 he becomes a professor of landscape painting. His career thus brings together printed imagery, the observation of places and the teaching of painting.
The Bavarian State Painting Collections preserve Schafschur, an oil on canvas of 1881 devoted to sheep shearing. Its horizontal format, approximately thirty by forty-nine centimetres, places rural labour within a modestly sized painting. Piazza delle Erbe in Verona, dated 1874, is instead painted in oil on cardboard. This urban view and the pastoral scene reveal complementary subjects: inhabited places emerge through an Italian square or an agricultural activity.
This profile brings together identity references for Albert Kappis and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
