Giovanni Domenico Cerrini, known as the Cavalier Perugino, worked chiefly in Rome, with periods in Florence and Perugia. His training is traditionally associated with Gianantonio Scaramuccia. Guido Reni’s influence on his painting does not, however, establish a direct apprenticeship with the Bolognese master. Cerrini’s religious commissions included work for Santa Maria in Traspontina and San Carlino alle Quattro Fontane.
The decoration of the dome of Santa Maria della Vittoria belongs to his monumental activity in Rome. On a different scale, the Louvre’s Magdalene at Prayer, dated to the second quarter of the seventeenth century, represents his devotional painting. This oil on canvas entered the French royal collections in 1821. Together, these works place his practice between large church decorations and the concentrated presentation of an individual sacred figure.
This profile brings together identity references for Giovanni Domenico Cerrini and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
