Alexander Keirincx (1600–1652), born in Antwerp, who died in Amsterdam, continued the landscape tradition of Jan Brueghel and Abraham Govaerts. Working in the northern Netherlands, he collaborated with Cornelis van Poelenburch, who supplied figures for several of his landscapes. His British activity included a commission from Charles I for ten views of northern England and Scotland.
Seton Palace and the Forth Estuary, an oil on panel dated about 1639 in the National Galleries of Scotland, depicts a Scottish Renaissance palace associated with the Seton family. Landscape with Deer Hunt of 1630, in Antwerp’s Royal Museum of Fine Arts, brings hunters, dogs and deer into wooded terrain containing a path and water. The description of particular places thus accompanies landscape enlivened by the action of the hunt.
