Born in Paris in 1848, Henry Lerolle made his debut at the Salon in 1868 with Chevreuils en forêt, one of his first works to be accepted. Initially known for his religious painting, he also produced numerous mural decorations, often devoted to religious subjects. His training included the Académie Suisse and the studio of Louis Lamothe. Music also played an important role in his career: he studied violin with Édouard Colonne and played the instrument throughout his life.
With Dans la Campagne, presented at the Salon of 1880, he turned to a rural subject and received a first-class medal. The painting, acquired by the musée du Luxembourg, is now in the musée d’Orsay. Around the turn of the century, his large-scale compositions depicted women dressed in white in landscapes. Douce Journée was presented at the Salon of 1897, followed by Femmes se promenant le long de l’eau in 1905. His decorative commissions included works for the Sorbonne, Paris City Hall, the church of Saint-Martin-des-Champs, the chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Calvaire, the Dominican convent in Dijon, the church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Gloriette in Caen and the Schola Cantorum.
He received the insignia of a Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1889. A collector of works by his contemporaries, including Degas, Fantin-Latour, Renoir, Gauguin and Cassatt, Lerolle also welcomed painters, musicians and writers to his home on avenue Duquesne. Edgar Degas, Claude Debussy, Vincent d’Indy and Ernest Chausson were among his visitors.
