Pierre Jutand trained at the École Boulle and subsequently at the decorative and fine arts schools in Paris, studying with teachers including Jules Cavaillès, Marcel Gromaire and Maurice Brianchon. Work in tapestry with Jean Lurçat broadened his training. As a landscape painter, he worked directly from his surroundings, often alongside Michel Pandel, drawing on stays in Brittany, the Corbières and Portugal. Pandel introduced him to Cravant in the Yonne, where he settled in 1966. His first solo exhibition in Paris took place at the Galerie Morantin-Nouvion in 1962; he later worked with Emmanuel David. Exhibitions devoted to his travels and decades of painting continued a career grounded in the experience of places and their pictorial interpretation.
