Wilhelm Hempfing

Born : 1886Died : 1948Documented citizenships : Germany

The German painter Wilhelm Hempfing, born in Schönau in 1886 and deceased in Karlsruhe in 1948, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe under Friedrich Fehr. He also learned etching and printing techniques there with Walter Conz.

His work consists mainly of landscapes and nudes, as well as portraits and flower still lifes. He also practised etching using a technique of his own, which the source describes as strongly influenced by Conz.

His study trips took him to southern Europe, particularly the Balkans, Italy and Spain, as well as North Africa, Brittany, Denmark and England. He also visited several coastal areas in northern Germany, and Sylt, Samland, Rügen and Usedom. Between 1937 and 1944, several of his works were presented at the Great German Art Exhibition at the Haus der Kunst in Munich. The works cited include Children on the Beach, dated around 1920, Bathers (1924), Landscape (1933) and Portrait (1946).
