Marcantonio Franceschini was born in Bologna in 1648 and died there in 1729. A pupil and later assistant of Carlo Cignani, he worked in painting, fresco and drawing. His Last Communion of Saint Mary of Egypt, painted on copper in 1680 and held by the Metropolitan Museum, joins idealised figures to religious narrative: Zosimus administers the sacrament to the saint.
Mythology also occupies an important place in his work. The Birth of Apollo and Diana in the Liechtenstein Princely Collections dates from 1692–1698; Prince Johann Adam Andreas I acquired the large canvas in 1698. Charity at Princeton, around 1689–1696, reveals his preparatory practice. Its paper is cut into an architectural pendentive shape, and the drawing combines red chalk and watercolour, with a grid added in graphite.
