William Callow went to Paris in 1829 to work as an engraver alongside Charles Bentley. During this Parisian period, he also exhibited a watercolour of Richmond Hill at the Paris Salon in 1831. Following this exhibition, he was offered a teaching position with the family of Louis-Philippe I; for several years, he gave lessons to the Duke of Nemours and Princess Clémentine.
A member of the Royal Watercolour Society from 1838, he returned to London in 1841. He then began painting larger-format works, moving away from the more sprightly style of his smaller early works. His travels took him to France, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. In 1846, he married Harriet Anne Smart, an artist and composer who had been his pupil.
This profile brings together identity references for William Callow and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
