Cornelis van Poelenburgh’s small-scale Italian landscapes combine biblical, mythological or literary subjects with Arcadian settings, often populated by nude figures and ruins. Painted on panel or copper, they are distinguished in the sources by light described as limpid. Trained by Abraham Bloemaert, he left for Rome around 1617. He also stayed in Florence, where he worked for Grand Duke Cosimo II de’ Medici, and then returned to Utrecht.
The Dance of the Satyrs, an oil painting on copper dated 1620–1622, is held at the Palatine Gallery in the Pitti Palace in Florence. The Fanciful View of the Campo Vaccino in Rome with a Donkey, also painted on copper and dated 1620, belongs to the collections of the Louvre. A Römische Landschaft mit Ruinen und Reisenden, presented under his name by the Lempertz auction house, is an oil painting on wood, monogrammed “C.P.” at the lower right.
On his return to Utrecht, he opened a studio where Daniel Vertangen, Dirck van der Lisse and Jan van Haensbergen, among others, worked. In 1627, Rubens bought several of his works during a visit to the city. The Utrecht collector Herman van Wyttenhorst owned twenty-five paintings by the artist, who is also the painter most strongly represented in the collection of Stadtholder Frederick Henry.
