Thomas van Apshoven was a seventeenth-century Flemish painter active in Antwerp. Associated with the teaching of David Teniers, he adopted motifs and painterly methods connected with that master in his own production. His often small-scale pictures depict village festivities, peasant interiors and moments of recreation. Communal life thus provides subjects for compositions in which figures and rural settings interact. His work also extends beyond these scenes: the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen preserves a depiction of an art cabinet featuring David Teniers. This turn towards the space of collecting broadens his repertoire. Between inhabited landscape, genre scene and an interior devoted to paintings, Apshoven explored different settings in which human activity could become the subject of art.
This profile brings together identity references for Thomas van Apshoven and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
