Theodor Mintrop, born in 1814 and deceased in 1870, was a German painter and draughtsman of the Düsseldorf school. After many years of agricultural work, he moved to Düsseldorf in 1844 with the support of Eduard Geselschap. At the academy he studied under Carl Ferdinand Sohn and received encouragement from Wilhelm von Schadow. Drawing retained an essential place within his artistic production.
His subjects include Madonnas, angels and allegorical compositions. Engelständchen, conceived for dissemination through engraving, belongs to his religious work. Child figures also populate a secular realm: they drink, dance, make music or personify the arts. His illustrations connected with the Malkasten artists’ association translate its members’ sociability into this imaginary register, bringing collective celebration together with narrative invention and the possibilities of graphic design.
