Dorothea Tanning (1910–2012), born in Galesburg, Illinois, largely educated herself by studying artworks in Chicago. In New York she encountered Surrealism at the Museum of Modern Art in 1936. Her 1942 self-portrait Birthday marked a decisive stage. She married Max Ernst in 1946 and lived with him in Sedona and later France while continuing to develop an independent imaginative world.
Her early paintings depict unsettling interiors, doors and female figures undergoing ambiguous transformations. Representation later became more fluid, moving between body and space. Tanning extended her investigations to prints, ballet designs and textile sculptures, notably in Hôtel du Pavot, Chambre 202. Returning to the United States after Ernst’s death, she continued painting while devoting increasing attention to poetry, memoirs and fiction.
