Judith Jans Leyster (1609–1660), a Dutch painter born in Haarlem and deceased in Heemstede, left a body of work that includes genre scenes, still lifes and portraits. Around 1630–1631, she returned to Haarlem and began working independently. She signed her works with a monogram incorporating a star, an allusion to the meaning of her surname in Dutch. In 1636, she married the painter Jan Miense Molenaer; the couple had five children.
Her works include The Serenade, an oil on panel dated 1629 and held at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Backgammon Game and The Proposition, both dated around 1631, are held at the Worcester Art Museum and the Mauritshuis in The Hague, respectively. The Concert, around 1633, is an oil on canvas held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Boy and Girl with a Cat and an Eel, dated around 1635, is at the National Gallery in London. The Merry Company, dated 1630 and held at the Louvre, was long attributed to Frans Hals; Cornelis Hofstede de Groot attributed it to Leyster in 1893.
