Gillis Mostaert worked in Antwerp, where he became a guild master in 1554–1555. His production encompasses landscapes, religious subjects and historical scenes. Treccani relates his art to Jan Mandijn and emphasises the place of biblical or military episodes within his landscapes, including depictions of burning cities and their destruction.
Feast of Saint Sebastian, held by the Museum of Fine Arts in Ghent, represents a village celebration and demonstrates his interest in communal scenes. Venus and Adonis, a drawing of 1583 in the Rijksmuseum, instead addresses a mythological narrative through pen and brush in brown ink. The Burning of Troy and Sodom and Gomorrah, recorded by Treccani in the Cologne collections, connect his landscape practice with classical and biblical accounts of the destruction of cities.
This profile brings together identity references for Gillis Mostaert and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
