The Polish artist Henryk Stażewski, born in Warsaw in 1894 and deceased in 1988, took part in several of the leading constructivist and avant-garde groups of his time. In 1924, he co-founded Blok, which remained active until 1926, and went on to participate in the founding of Praesens (1926–1929) and the a.r. group (1929–1936). In Paris, he joined Cercle et Carré in 1929, followed by Abstraction-Création in 1931. His first solo exhibition took place in Warsaw in 1933.
Oil paintings cited from around this period include Kompozycja, dated circa 1929–1930, and Kompozycja fakturowa, made in 1931. From 1956, Stażewski worked on abstract reliefs, first presented in 1959. In 1976, his works were included in the touring exhibition Constructivism in Poland: 1923 to 1935, organised by the Museum of Modern Art in New York. A retrospective of his work was held at the Łódź Museum of Art in 1994.
