Léon de Smet

Documented citizenships : Belgium

Léon de Smet (1881–1966), Gustave’s younger brother, studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent. He subsequently shared a studio with young artists including Frits Van den Berghe and Albert Servaes. Settling in the Sint-Martens-Latem area from 1906, he developed paintings concerned with light, landscape and the intimacy of domestic interiors.

The First World War took him to Britain. In London he moved among writers and artists and held a solo exhibition at the Leicester Gallery in 1917. His portraits contributed to his recognition within this milieu. Returning to Belgium, he settled in Deurle in 1930 while maintaining his personal Impressionist approach. Ghent’s Museum of Fine Arts dedicated an exhibition to him in 1953, followed by another in Deinze in 1966.

This profile brings together identity references for Léon de Smet and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
