Pávlos, the professional name of Pavlos Dionyssopoulos (1930–2019), was a Greek artist born in Filiatra and deceased in Athens. He studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts with Yannis Moralis, then discovered Paris in 1954 through a scholarship. There he attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. His career gradually led him away from painted surfaces towards works constructed from printed paper.
Posters mechanically cut into narrow strips became his preferred material. Assembled and expanded into volumes, they recreate clothes, familiar objects or plant forms. Colour thus emerges from the recovered material and its arrangement. Greece’s National Gallery holds Rideaux, dated 1968, alongside shirts, coats and neckties that exemplify this transformation of everyday life.
This profile brings together identity references for Pavlos Dionyssopoulos and paintings, drawings and works on paper documented in auction catalogues.
